In Denver, and other geographic areas with high altitudes, there are more people who are affected by brown spots. Because of the high altitude of Denver, our skin gets about 25% more UV radiation than if we lived at sea level.

In this day and age with WebMD and Google, many patients have attempted to do what we call “self diagnosis”. With that said, many of our patients come in and ask us, “What is venous reflux?” They have read something about it on the web and are sure they have it.

So, what is venous reflux?

Venous reflux is simply doctor speak for describing wrong way blood flow in veins. Healthy veins have valves that close tight to keep blood moving one direction back to the heart against gravity.

What causes venous reflux?

Very commonly these valves become damaged as we age and do not close correctly. When this happens the blood is able to fall back down the vein opposite the normal flow. This backwards blood flow is diagnosed with ultrasound and is called reflux.

What are symptoms of venous reflux?

Venous reflux causes symptoms like ugly superficial veins, aching, soreness, cramping, itching, swelling, varicose veins and even restless leg syndrome.

Here are a few tips to help you choose a varicose vein doctor:

1) Look for the most effective equipment. The provider must have an ultrasound and should be able to do not only sclerotherapy but also Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) if necessary. There are several devices that a doctor can use to perform the EVLA but they are not all equal. The 1320nm CoolTouch is our favorite due to its patented pullback device. All the other laser devices are pulled back by hand introducing potential provider error. Also the 1320nm wavelength causes much less bruising than older devices that use either 810nm or 980nm. The VNUS radiofrequency system can be good but it can be difficult to treat short segments of diseased vessels if the provided does not have a specific radiofrequency wires for the system. Diseased short segments that are left untreated lead to higher recurrence rates.

2) Choose a varicose vein doctor committed to education. Just because a provider has the equipment to treat varicose veins, it doesn’t mean they know how to use it. Look for varicose vein doctors that are members of the American College or Phlebology or have specific training in vascular surgery.

3) Does the varicose vein doctor have experience? Our recommendation is that any varicose vein doctor you choose should have performed at least 100 cases with their current equipment.
