A Jessner’s Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel designed to penetrate deeper than a traditional AHA peel. A Jessner’s Peel will also remove more of the skin than a traditional AHA peel. The solution used is a combination of salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid), lactic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA) and resorcinol. To begin, your provider will apply a gentle glycolic cleanser to the area to be treated. Glycolic cleansers are used to fully remove oils that accumulate on the skin as well as the topmost layer of dead skin cells to allow the Jessner’s solution to penetrate properly. When the solution is applied, it may burn slightly. A fan can be used on the treatment area to make your procedure more comfortable. Depending on how deep a peel is wanted, the solution may be applied in several layers. A whitened look, also know as “frosting,” may develop but will dissipate within a few hours. After 10 minutes, your provider will neutralize the acid and use cool water to remove the chemicals from the skin. A calming mask or warm towel will be applied to help soothe the skin.
For about seven days, skin will peel and flake – this is completely normal. Afterwards, the skin will turn pink or brown. Soon after that, smoother, younger-looking skin will be revealed.
