Intense Pulse Light

Intense Pulse Light or IPL is also commonly referred to as a Photofacial (or Fotofacial). IPL improves the appearance of photoaged skin by removing excess dark spots and decreasing redness. IPL evens out skin tone and can be used to treat:

  • Age spots (liver spots)
  • Freckles
  • General Hyperpigmentation
  • General Redness
  • Facial flushing
  • Other minor sun damage

This procedure is ideal for patients with active lifestyles because the procedure requires no downtime and has a low risk of side effects. The gentle, non-ablative treatments use broad spectrum light to treat the face, chest, neck and hands—virtually anywhere that sun damage shows.

Colorado Skin and Vein is one of the leading providers of intense pulse light in Denver, CO and we are always happy to meet with you to review your needs. Please call 303.683.3235 to schedule an appointment or request a consult, and someone will call you as soon as possible.

What does IPL do?

IPL removes dark spots on the skin and can be used to decrease both diffuse redness and precancerous lesions. It can be used for: Age spots and sun damage, rosacea, Poikiloderma, Keratosis Pilaris, Melasma, Freckles, and diffuse redness. IPL can also be used with Levulan for treatment of Actinic Keratosis (precancerous sun damage).

What happens during the treatment?

IPL is used to destroy pigmented spots on the skin. Energy from the hand-piece is absorbed by the dark pigment in the skin breaking it apart. There is no downtime and patients may resume their normal activities that day. Treatment time is determined by the size of the area. A full face takes about 30 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

Most lesions will resolve in about three sessions. After the area is treated, the lesion will  become darker over the next few days until sloughing off about 7-10days later.

What else do I need to know?

Care should be taken not to perform IPL over any lesion which may be melanoma as this may delay diagnosis of the disease. This is one reason why it is so important to have an MD, PA or RN perform your treatment. Patients should expect some mild redness, which goes away in 2-3 days and some peeling over the next two weeks.
