Scar Revision Overview
Scars are areas of tissue repair where fibrous tissue replaces normal tissue after an injury. Scars lack elastin, sweat glands and hair follicles, thus their different texture and appearance from the surrounding tissue.
Scar revision is a group of procedures used to achieve a more acceptable cosmetic result after a scar has formed. Scar revision can be sought for scars due to acne, surgery, or after trauma. It usually involves the use of multiple modalities to help remove damaged tissue and help foster the growth of new, more organized tissue. Even as recently as the last twelve months, there have been great advances in the revision of scars and keloids.
Effective therapy centers around four different procedures:
- Steroid Injections: a combination of steroids and other factors are injected on a weekly basis, normally for 4-8 weeks, to help reduce the thickness of the scar.
- Subcission and Filling: the tissue is numbed with lidocaine and a small needle is used to free the inside of the scar attached to the tissue below, then a filler such as Radiesse or Silicon is added to restore volume.
- Pulsed Dye Laser and Nd:YAG Laser: Vascular lasers are used to reduce both color and thickness of scars (best for red or purple scars). Usually about 3-5 treatments are needed spaced about four weeks apart.
- Pearl Resurfacing: The CO2 is used to vaporize damaged tissue over the scar. The heat from the laser will encourage new, healthy tissue growth.
